Let’s be honest; we’re never going to be Gordon Ramsay. Sure, we’ll try. We’ll attempt to make ourselves dinner every single night – but sometimes it’s just easier to call for a takeout, you know? However, this month we have made it our mission to become even more of a whizz kid in the kitchen and make our own food from scratch every single night of the week. While this does mean that we’ll have to go grocery shopping and fill up our refrigerator for the first time in a few years, we’re ready for it. Well, we will be once we know which basic ingredients you should always have in your kitchen…
Eggs are just the greatest, aren’t they?! Okay, we know that we’re probably a bit too egg-citable about this food product, but eggs really are the greatest addition to any kitchen. One of the best things about eggs is that they can be used in various different ways. They can be scrambled, fried, poached, or even made into an omelet. Eggs are also a great way to add protein into your diet, and most recipes require at least one egg to mesh everything together.
Have you ever just had a real hankering for pasta loaded with cheese, upon more cheese, and then a little sprinkling of cheese on top? Well, you’re not alone. Having pasta in your kitchen is a given because we always seem to have about five packets open at once – but there is nothing worse than realizing that you have pasta but no pasta sauce. Because of this, you should always make sure that you have tomato paste in your kitchen. Not only can this be used for pasta dishes, but it can also be used as the base for homemade pizzas, or in any other dish that needs a little tomato pick-me-up.
We have a feeling that we probably don’t need to tell you this one, but it is important that you do keep some cheese aside for cooking, rather than eating a block of cheese a night like a taco. With so many different types of cheese out there, it’s easy to find new and improved ways to add this product into your dishes. You can use it to add a little somethin’ somethin’ to a sauce, you can add it on top of your dishes as a garnish, or you could just go ahead and bake a camembert for dinner. We won’t judge.
Although we’re always told to stay away from fats and oils in our diet, it’s sometimes important to get these healthy fats into our lives and our bodies – and this is where cooking oils come into play. If you’re worried about which oils to choose and which ones will benefit you the most, it’s always best to play it safe and choose either canola oil or olive oil. These oils can be used for baking or frying, and are easy to use if you’re in a rush.
Chicken or vegetable broth
There will be some days where you just really don’t want to whip up a Michelin-star meal for yourself. You want something quick and simple and something that won’t take you an age to make. You just want to shove it in your mouth and sit on the couch five minutes later with a full stomach. Luckily, filling your cupboard with chicken and vegetable broth is the best way to ensure that this can happen. This way, you can make your own soup within minutes by adding a few vegetables to your broth or even adding a little chicken if you’re feeling particularly wild.
Have you always struggled with filling your grocery cart and your kitchen cupboards? Well, it seems as though it doesn’t need to be as difficult as it may seem, as you just need these basic ingredients you should always have in your kitchen.
